Books

I always have 8-12 books my bedside table that I’m reading. Yes, at the same time. I know this makes some of you linear / organized / process oriented folk uncomfortable but it’s my style. A little bit of all, all the time. My therapist brain allows me to keep track 😜.

Here’s a few worth sharing:

“Stolen Focus: Why You Can’t Pay Attention” by Johann Hari – I cannot get enough of this British journalist’s writing! From addiction to depression if you read one book this year – choose one of his! Also has amazing TED talks.

“Mating in Captivity” – I’ve read this a few times and it’s fantastic. Also a great audio book. Mating In Captivity explains the best sex advice that couples therapist Esther Perel (who I love!) has discovered in over twenty years of experience, and explains the barriers that can kill sexual desire in our domesticated society and what you and your spouse can do to remove them. She’s a thought leader in redefining marriage and relationships and I take every class I can from her.

“Brown Girls” by Daphne Palasi Andreades’s is a brash and talky novel is about a group of women who grew up together in an outer borough of New York City. If you or someone you know has lived immigration experience or identifies as a “Brown Girl” you’ll love this. Can’t wait for more from this author.

“Come As You Are” by Emily Nagoski. Also the author of “Burnout” (yep, on my bedside table), she is a renowned sex educator, scientist, researcher, social justice advocate and feminist. These books are a MUST for women of all ages. “Come As You Are” is focused on demystifying female pleasure and is education made enjoyable.

“Solutions and Other Problems” is a ridiculously authentic and deeply transparent collection of short stories (creatively illustrated) which shares a mental health journey of struggles, acceptance and hilarity. Also the author of “Hyperbole and a Half” Allie Brosh makes these worth the splurge as she offers a light hearted take on subjects we take oh so seriously.
