Somehow life goes on.

You don’t always get to choose the ending.

Endings are not always in our control and yet beginnings almost always are. And so we live with this conviction the end is ours to own. But, it’s not.

The dream that was constructed. The belief of what was to come. The idea of the perfect ending.

Sometimes decisions are made for you. It seems often times they are. The echo of what was, what should have been, could have been rings loudly.

Most of the time things don’t end as we think they will. There’s no choir or chorus. A victory lap left undone. No farewell and even sometimes, no explanation.

What we had planned gets left on the field. It’s grief and loss that takes the place of certainty and a feeling that we’ve been robbed of something we thought was to come.

I have learned this year that you don’t always get to choose the ending. That’s it. We don’t always get to have agency and control over the endings in our lives. Transitions are tough, especially when we are caged by the belief the ending should have been different.

Easy come, hard go. But life goes on.
