Every day I ask myself about the pros and cons of our ability to access news and information within seconds. The useful and the not so uselful.
When my news or media “push” breaks through on my phone and I’m alerted to a shooting or a natural disaster I’m torn because I want to be informed. And I don’t think keeping my head in the sand is a responsible yet I’m also concerned about the impact to my nervous system and the nervous system of everyone around me when we get fed information that makes, or keeps, us anxious.
I love digital and social media for so many reasons. Yet I don’t think we really know the long term impacts because we are living a massive human experiment. As a therapist, I want you to think about what media you consume and how it affects your ability to be calm, productive and present. Just get curious. Awareness can make a world of difference. I’ve become a very cautious consumer of media and what I digest.
