Blue Monday.

On Monday, January 17th we will have reached “Blue Monday”. The third Monday in January is dubbed the most depressing day of the year. A combination of post holiday reality, dark days and long nights, and colder weather prevail. Not to mention the holiday bills and the reality that most New Year’s resolutions don’t make it past this date. So if you feel a little down, you are not alone.

So what can you do about it? Well, you can’t change the weather, the hemisphere or the interest rates but you can do a few things to help yourself out. None of these are earth shattering, but they work.

1) Go outside. Don’t worry about macros. Just get outdoors and move around. Walk. Ski. Make a snow angle. Doesn’t matter.

2) Make a connection. Call a friend. Reach out to the people who help you feel better – not worse. The latter may be in abundant supply so chose wisely.

3) Choose one “healthy” thing a day. Drink more water. Eat something green. Stretch. Have a long hot bath. Don’t go for too many, just pick one and do it. Every day.

4) Consider counselling. Even if things in life are going ok, a good therapist can help you keep it all on track and even identify skills that will help you achieve more of what you want. Counselling isn’t just for when things fall apart, it’s for keeping things on track.

5) Beware the January stealth sales of “health”. All those who stand to make a profit on your low feelings have a special place in hell as far as I’m concerned. Beech body’s and shakes, nutrition supplements, infrared mats and expensive miracle solutions will only offer a temporary relief.

It’s January. You will have some down days. It’s normal. Be kind to yourself and others. Make a snow angel, call a friend, eat some kale. This too shall pass.
