Beware.

Beware the “influencer”.

I don’t know about you but I can sure get sucked into something. And it’s a real piss off because I’m 46 years old with a good head on my shoulders.

I’m talking about those people who are master influencers. The kind that fool you. The kind that sell wellness and health in a way you almost don’t feel sold. Don’t get me wrong I’m in business too, and there’s nothing wrong with sales. It’s just there’s something about the curation of this oh so achievable life state or life style that just…isn’t. And like so many of you it leaves me feeling like I’ve failed – again. If only I could just plan more, be more committed or just get my shit together. Meal plan dammit, ugh.

Let’s stop for a moment.

The young, fit or privileged who sell health as an easy fix. The influencers who have a baby and document each moment and preach all the virtues while architecting each corner of their lives to achieve the outcomes (as a business) that are so out of reach for most – like a flat stomach or organic baby food. Those who give advice and tell you all the easy steps (just set your intention!). The “make yourself a priority” messaging. But I’ve met very few who can meet these standards because most are doing the best they can, working hard to keep a float, managing REAL life. Getting the nature walk and adding Spirulina to smoothies is a dream when you are working 8-5, travelling for work, balancing day care drop offs and sick kids.

So beware the dangerous stealth influencers. They seem like your ultra relatable friend who has found the magic elixir who can offer you a program. It’s not motivation or encouragement right sized to your life. It’s an extreme example and a business and while they may have a good product it may not fit your life. And you my friend, are good just the way you are.

Sometimes I need to remember to be my own influencer and cleanse my social media feed to those who are in this real, gritty, mistake ridden, imperfect and unpredictable life like me each day. Go on, hit unfollow. It feels good.
