The over thinker.

Overthinking involves thinking about a certain topic or situation excessively, analyzing it for long periods of time. When you overthink, you have a hard time getting your mind to focus on anything else. Often cited as a loop, it is almost always unproductive.

Many believe that overthinking is a benefit since it involves looking at an issue or problem from nearly every viewpoint possible and anticipating future events, but the opposite is true. Research suggests that overthinking is associated with feelings of depression, anxiety, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

Over thinking is in the family of “maladaptive thinking patterns” and can likely be traced back to childhood, an event or trauma, or a set of compounding experiences. Regardless of origin, help is available.

Almost all therapeutic approaches can assist overthinking and it’s mean cousin rumination, but you’ll need to work at it. Like anything, our thinking patterns become a habit.

Some quick tips –

Get aware; notice the topics, times, most likely situations that you overthink. Notice what you notice without judgement.

Get mindful; practice some self acceptance.

Get busy; distraction works.

Get help; life doesn’t have to be plagued with constant overthinking.
